solid 5 miles and some motivation

just got back from a 5 mile run. I really picked up my pace and i feel great. i ran up monroe mills to penlawn and then down around the golf course, back down floralwood and around my street home. this is the longest run i have done yet. My body felt pretty good, i controlled my heart rate and my legs felt good for the most part. I recently have been researching a u.s. olympic runner Ryan hall. He said that the best way to run is to perform outside of yourself. he also said that running is pain management. This really meant a lot to me because it shows that to be good at what you do, you have to fight the pain off and keep going harder than ever. I run by this principle now. When my legs are burning, my ankles are sore, and im running up a hill, I pick up the pace. I know it will pay off and make me a better runner. today was motivational for me. another thing i really enjoy is being in nature. I saw countless deer, and a large hawk just circling over the golf course. today wasnt the easiest run but I tried hard and had a visitor (colton nichols) pull up behind and hand me a water bottle. its really nice to have your friends there to support you like that. He saw me running and just drove down the road i was on and helped me pace faster. tomorrow will be a rest day or a weight training day.

  1. Good job. That's funny about Colton. One time I had my mommy bring me water lol. Since that's your long run, you should probably rest tomorrow. It's good that your pushing it, but once you further than 5 miles you should handle your runs different. 5 miles or less can be handled at tempo pace (comfortably hard). Once you try six miles (you should wait at least a week),you should run slower and pick it up as you go. Once you get into longer runs you should learn to take the first couple miles at a pace where you don't even feel tired.

If you look at my long run last week and the one this week, you can see what I'm talking about. The one last weekend (8 miles) i started off too fast. Look at the spilits table and you'll see that. I felt horrible later on and didn't have a lot of fun.

This weekend's long run (9 miles) you can see I started off a lot slower. I enjoyed it and it seemed easier.

One last thing. I know sometimes when you push it you get really tired with burning legs like we do in track. Once you get to longer runs your pain should feel more like fatigue- not burning. You legs should feel heavy.

I don't mean to crap on your parade. Good job. Five miles is tough because the whole time you think "im almost there" and you pick it up. . . when you really have a lot left lol.
